Get Moving… Dancing That Is!

Have you had a love-hate relationship with exercise? Mix it up, have some fun and DANCE! It won’t even feel like you’re exercising! We’re challenging everyone to get 30 minutes of dance in their life during National Dance Week (April 19-28) and just in case you need convincing, there are really great reasons why dance should be a part of your everyday life.

People often get stuck in a rut because the gym feels like more work after a long day in the office. No need to punish yourself, the best kind of exercise is the kind you’ll actually do. We make time for the things we enjoy, so turn on your favorite playlist and have some fun!

Why is dancing good for you? That’s a great question! 😊

Physical Health:

There are five components of fitness: cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscular endurance, body composition, and muscular strength. Rather than isolating those categories, dancing targets all of these AND improves balance, agility, coordination, power, reactivity, and speed. Dancing is a low impact, well rounded activity that anybody can participate in and enjoy!

Mental Health:

Dancing improves physical health so what about psychological health? Did you know dancing can increase energy and mood, and decrease stress, anxiety, and depression? Studies show that dancing provides another means of expressing ones emotions, and serves as an outlet that improves negative emotions. While this is true when dancing on your own, dancing with others helps you feel more connected and social, further boosting your mood.

How to Participate:

Enough convincing you of the benefits and the fun, let’s get those creative juices flowing! Here are some ideas to participate in our dance challenge!

✓ Dance Class:

There are so many dance classes out there, take a moment to pick the style of dance that fits you: swing dancing, hip hop, tango, Zumba… the list goes on! Are you a member at a gym? Check out their classes. Live near a dance studio? Maybe that’s your thing. Or maybe you want to dance in the comfort of your own home?  There are plenty of videos online for that. Take your pick!

✓ Spring Cleaning Dance:

Maybe you just want to add dance into your every day life. Spice up your spring cleaning chores and get down while you vaccum, pirouette as you put the dishes in the cabinet, or throw some line dancing in while you dust. It all counts!

✓ Video Games Are Still In:

Flashback to Dance Dance Revolution, how about High School Musical? Or better yet, Just Dance! If you have a game system, there is a good chance you have or know someone who has a dance game you can pop in!

✓ Download an App:

Love to dance but need ideas and motivation? Download an app. Of course there are dancing apps, do a quick search and see which fits you best!

✓ Dance To a Playlist:

Maybe you don’t need all of the classes, games and apps, and you just like to move. Well you can’t dance without good music! Here, take this pop playlist on iTunes or Spotify and save yourself the hassle! Don’t like pop? No sweat, maybe check out an iTunes 80’s Playlist (Spotify 80’s Playlist) or iTunes Jazz/R&B Playlist (Spotify Jazz/R&B Playlist).
